Saint-Vincent Cathedral

An architectural jewel

St. Vincent’s Cathedral, in the neo-Romanesque style, like all the buildings of this period, is 75 m. by 32 m. wide. On the façade are a blind archway and the mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. Dominating this arcature is the representation of the Eternal Father by the sculptor Figlia. The building material is marble from Djebel-Oust, an old Roman quarry that the architect put back into operation. Two massive bell towers, crowned with tiara-shaped domes and surmounted by the cross, overlook the avenue.

The foundation consists of an imposing mass of 2,133 beams from a forest of eucalyptus trees. The rock was reached at an average depth of 15 m., but in some places it was necessary to go down to 23 m.
